EDUC 602 Adolescent Literacy: Motivational Before, During, and After Reading Strategies (3 credits)

Provides teachers the beginning, during, and after (BDA) strategies needed to use with teens for whom comprehension is a challenge. Motivation, engagement, and the desire to read are the thrust of the course. Journaling, performance poetry, plays, newspaper activities, and in-depth lesson and mini-unit planning are developed. The course incorporates age-appropriate standards, technology, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing, while keeping it engaging for the participants. Discussion on starting a school book club included. Critical evaluation of self and peer teaching methods incorporated.
