Master of Education in TESOL and Literacy with ESL Program Specialist Certificate

Please note: Pennsylvania Department of Education ESL Certification Requirements were revised in August 2012. These new requirements have been incorporated into new programs for the Masters of Education in TESOL and Literacy with ESL Program Specialist Certification and the ESL Program Specialist Certification. These new programs are awaiting PDE approval.

Students enrolled in these programs WILL BE SUBJECT TO ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS.

Students must meet with their advisor to confirm certification requirements.

This program provides a thorough treatment of the fundamental concepts and practices of English as a Second Language pedagogy, including language; culture; planning, implementing, and managing instruction; assessment; and professionalism. In addition, the program provides students with a strong foundation in the theories of reading and writing in both a first and second language. Emphasis is placed on practical knowledge to promote literacy development for second language learners and strategies to assist English Language Learners (ELLs) in the different stages of second language acquisition, including achieving the development of academic language.

The ESL Program Specialist Certificate candidates must hold a valid Pennsylvania Instructional I or II Certificate.

Electives (9 credits)

Students should meet with their advisor to select School of Education electives appropriate to their educational experiences and professional plans.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires ALL certification candidates after May 2013 to have completed 9 credits in Special Education. If the student's transcript does not show completion of these requirements upon official evaluation, the following courses must be taken as electives:
