The Pennsylvania Department of Education will increase the application costs
for teacher certification from $40 to $100. This new fee structure will
be implemented to all applications received by PDE after June
30, 2010. This includes Intern teaching, Instructional I and Instructional
II certificates. Applications will be returned after that date if not accompanied
by the new $100 fee.
:: GPA Alternative for Certification
The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires that all in-state candidates in initial teacher certification programs culminating in a Bachelor's degree or higher must complete the program with an overall 3.0 GPA. However, an alternative is now available for students graduating with between a 2.8 and <3.0 GPA. Students graduating with a GPA between 2.8 and <3.0 GPA who earn a score on the appropriate subject area assessment (Praxis Test) that is one standard error of measure above the established qualifying score for that assessment can qualify for certification. The qualifying scores are listed here from PDE.

:: School of Education develops site for new teachers called GRAD
HAT- GRADuate Help and Assistance for Teachers.
Holy Family University faculty has developed a website called GRAD HAT. This
website is designed as an outreach program to serve new graduates and teachers
who have completed their initial teacher certification requirements. During your
first years as a teacher, challenges will arise which often involve planning
for instruction, managing the classroom, motivating students, dealing with individual
differences, assessing student work, and working with parents. Navigating the
path to continued professional development and additional credentials also presents
a challenge. We have assembled information on GRAD HAT as a starting place for
you to find answers and to obtain assistance. This site can be accessed through
the School of Education
website under GRAD HAT - Graduate Help and Assistance
for Teachers.

:: Praxis Testing guidelines revised to extend score validity for In-state candidates to 10 years
Effective on May 1, 2008, the Pennsylvania
Department of Education has revised the Praxis score validity from five
to ten years for candidates educated within the Commonwealth. This pertains
to candidates for certification and is applicable to all educators who
are currently applying for Pennsylvania Certification. The score must
meet the qualifying score in effect on the date the application was received.
All candidates whose teacher preparation program was completed outside
Pennsylvania must successfully complete the same tests as candidates
prepared in the Commonwealth. All tests must be successfully completed
within five years of the date of application for certification, even
when the interstate agreement is in effect.
